LOS ANGELES, CA – The Genos Center Foundation is thrilled to announce the invitation of renowned photographer and philanthropist, Douglas Busch, to serve on the Host Committee for the Los Angeles Center of Photography (LACP) 8th Annual Awards Ceremony & Fundraiser. The event is set to celebrate outstanding achievements in the world of photography. LACP at 10: Celebrating a First Decade as a Non-Profit Saturday, October 21, 2023, 4-6pm.  The event will be a champagne reception, celebrating photographic heroes, marking LACP’s first decade as a non-profit and its move to Downtown LA.

Douglas Busch is acclaimed not only for his photographic prowess but also for his tireless work in the field of photography education. As the founder of the Genos Center Foundation, Busch has leverage his experience utilizing photography as an art form to become a teaching tool for education. The Genos Center Art Museum and Gardens, an initiative by Busch and the Genos Center Foundation, is a multicultural art center, non-denominational chapel and reflective gardens that aims to foster tolerance through art and education. Visitors will form new ties between their understanding of history and emotional subconscious through curated shows that highlight the overlooked details of genocide sparking curiosity about human conditions and fears.

The LACP’s mission has always been clear – to celebrate photography and its role in shaping narratives. Through its annual awards ceremony, the organization recognizes outstanding contributors to the world of photography. This year, LACP will honor:

  • Catherine Opie with the Stieglitz Award: A recognition for photographers who, like Alfred Stieglitz, have revolutionized the way we perceive photography.
  • Rose Shoshana and Rose Gallery with the Spark Award: An award that celebrates individuals and establishments that have ignited passion and growth in the field of photography.
  • William Camargo with the JEDI Award: This award recognizes photographers who have made significant contributions in the areas of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in photography.
  • Jordie Oetken with the Emerging Voices Award: Presented to the rising stars of photography, who bring fresh perspectives and unique voices to the medium.

At the venue, LACP will showcase creations from students involved in the Center’s Outreach Program. This program provides visual literacy workshops to middle and high school students from South and East LA, aiming to inspire and uplift people and communities by fostering creativity and self-expression. In collaboration with non-profits, educational institutions, and arts groups, we curate engaging programs, educational strategies, and partnerships to reach a wider audience.

“LACP at 10 is a vibrant hub that supports photographers throughout all stages of their careers,” said Dr. Rotem Rozental, Executive Director, “we actively seek to reflect LA’s unique character in our programs, exhibitions, classes, workshops, outreach initiatives and events. This year’s Award Ceremony reflects our deep commitment to photo-based artistic production and the region that continues to inform our perspectives. We are thrilled to join DTLA with a new physical location, while continuing our online activities and connections with photographers across the country and the world.”

The event aims to honor the photography community in Los Angeles and the lively arts culture of DTLA. LACP at 10 stands as a vibrant organization motivating and connecting photographers, narrators, curators, and professionals across different levels both in Los Angeles and further afield. We warmly welcome the public to be a part of commemorating the upcoming chapter.

The Genos Center Foundation is proud to announce that our Founder & Architectural Designer Douglas Isaac Busch has been awarded the prestigious FAA Legacy Awards by the University of Illinois College of Fine and Applied Arts. This award recognizes college alumni and friends who have demonstrated courage, curiosity, and passion in their work. This award honors lifelong learners and advocates, individuals who have impacted their fields in transformative ways—catalysts with distinguished service to the arts.

Busch, an American photographer, artist, inventor, teacher, gemologist, philanthropist and architectural designer, is known for using the world’s largest portable view cameras and negatives to produce the world’s largest photographic contact prints.

His photographs have been exhibited in many one-man shows in museums across the United States and Europe along with accompanying books and are in the permanent collections of numerous esteemed museums such as the J. Paul Getty Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Wilhelm Hack Museum and the Mannheim Museum of Art, Germany.

As an architectural designer, Busch’s imaginative eco-friendly, sustainable architectural work and drought-tolerant landscape designs have allowed him to work with many colleagues throughout California through his firm Busch Design Build Inc. including designing the late Bob Saget’s home and others featured in Los Angeles Times, Robb Report, and Malibu Times. Prior to 2018’s Woolsey fire Busch developed EcoPark on a 20 acre parcel in Malibu slated to be turned into a public eco-themed park and learning center. The goal was to use the land to demonstrate sustainable building and technologies to the masses.

A legacy award indeed, Douglas Isaac Busch’s legacy project was announced in early 2023 through his work with The Genos Center Foundation. Our organization’s goal is to build a multicultural art gallery, non-denominational chapel and sustainable reflective gardens

Receiving the FAA Legacy Award is a great honor for Douglas Isaac Busch, as it highlights his commitment to excellence in art and architecture. The criteria for this award emphasizes courage, curiosity, and passion – three values that are essential to any creative field. With this award, Douglas Isaac Busch serves as an example for future generations of artists who strive to make a meaningful impact on the world through art.

On behalf of The Genos Center Foundation we congratulate Douglas Isaac Busch on receiving this prestigious award from the University of Illinois College of Fine and Applied Arts!

New Genos Center will use art to raise awareness, promote healing, and offer new perspectives on past and present issues, serving as a voice for marginalized communities.

MALIBU, Calif., Feb. 22, 2023 — The Genos Center Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is proud to announce a capital campaign for the development of a multi-cultural art gallery, non-denominational chapel, and reflective gardens focused on eradicating genocides worldwide by founder and architectural designer Douglas Isaac Busch.

Designed to raise awareness and education for genocides not only of the past but those occurring today in areas such as Myanmar (also known as Burma), China, Ethiopia, Iraq, Syria and South Sudan, Genos Center will serve as a space of remembrance and education. Curated exhibits will rotate on a six-month basis utilizing art as a powerful medium for storytelling. The center will collaborate with artists, scholars, and educators to create meaningful and impactful experiences for audiences of all ages.

Utilizing eco-sustainable architecture, the building will incorporate sustainable design principles and cutting-edge green technologies, making it a model of energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. The non-denominational chapel and reflective gardens extend the open-air feeling of the architecture, allowing for spaces of calm reflection with drought-tolerant landscaping that create an enriching and enduring experience for all.

Upon completion, The Genos Center Foundation will donate the complete project to an institution, foundation, or city at an agreed time along with an endowment that will maintain the building, staff it, cover taxes and other expenses where it can be sited in perpetuity, to maintain evolving exhibitions and offer a public park destination via the gardens. This plan allows the exhibit space to be continually changing and evolving as a destination for the public from around the world to seek out and observe the evolution of art, architecture, and landscaping.

“Art has the unique ability to humanize the victims of genocide and bring their stories to life in a way that mere words cannot. We hope that by using art as a tool for education, we can help people understand the gravity of genocide and inspire them to take action to prevent it,” said Douglas Isaac Busch, founder, and architectural designer of Genos Center.

With an initial commitment of over $1 Million, Douglas Isaac Busch and The Genos Center Foundation understand that every genocide matters. The first phase of the project will require $2M in seed capital of which 50% has been raised with a total of $30M needed for full construction and project completion. Funding opportunities are available at all levels, including capital and endowment. Additional involvement opportunities exist at multiple levels.

Genocide, one of the most heinous crimes against humanity, has been a tragic reality throughout history. The Genos Center Foundation believes that through art and education, we can work towards preventing future genocides and promoting a culture of tolerance and understanding.

“Genos Center will be a place for people to learn about the effects of genocide and its impact on humanity,” said Busch. “Through reflection, I hope that this museum will help to raise awareness and promote understanding and healing.”

With full design plans in place, Genos Center is currently seeking a final location along with initial founding partner support from individuals, organizations, and foundations to help fund its mission.
